Provincial Government of Pangasinan, CPS, and L-NU Host Second CPS Lecture Series 2024

July 3, 2024

The Provincial Government of Pangasinan, through the Center for Pangasinan Studies (CPS), in partnership with Lyceum-Northwestern University (L-NU), successfully held the second lecture of the CPS Lecture Series 2024 on July 3, 2024, at Hotel Le Duc. The event, titled “The Artisanal Salt Making Industry of Pangasinan: Challenges and Opportunities,” focused on documenting the artisanal salt-making industry in the province, with an emphasis on its revitalization and sustainability.

The lecture opened with a welcome address from CPS Executive Director, Dr. Perla E. Legaspi. Messages were also delivered by Dr. Luz T. Duque-Hammershaimb, President of L-NU and Dr. Marco Francisco S. Duque, Executive Vice President of L-NU. Dr. Cynthia P. Lopez, Vice President for Research and Innovation at L-NU, delivered an engaging lecture on the artisanal salt-making industry, shedding light on the challenges and opportunities faced by this unique sector in Pangasinan. Her lecture was based on findings of a research conducted by her team with support from the Provincial government through the Center for Pangasinan Studies.

The open forum featured active participation from representatives of the Department of Trade and Industry (DTI), salt farmer cooperatives, and salt production experts. Attendees included faculty and students from CPS’s 7 partner Higher Education Institutions (HEIs), Local Government Units (LGUs) across Pangasinan, and other key stakeholders of an industry deeply connected to the province’s heritage, as reflected in its name derived from the word “asin” or “salt.”
