Communication Toolkit: Bridging Research and Community

Lyceum-Northwestern University participated in the Region 1 Health Research Development Consortium’s training on “Strategic Communication in Health Research” last September 24-25, 2024, at the Hotel Veniz, Baguio City. The two-day training provided attendees with essential knowledge and skills for effectively conveying research findings. The program’s structure facilitated a comprehensive understanding of the communication process, emphasizing the importance of targeting the right audience through appropriate channels and at optimal times.

The initial sessions included didactic discussions of Dr. Marvin F. Munar, Resource Speaker, on the fundamental principles of strategic communication. Participants were introduced to frameworks that underline the necessity of aligning messages with the interests and needs of diverse stakeholders. A significant component of the training focused on enhancing effective written, verbal, and visual communication skills. Attendees engaged in practical exercises that highlighted the importance of clarity and engagement in health messaging. Through guided discussions and expert insights, participants learned to transform complex research data into accessible formats that relates with various audiences such as poster presentations and 3-minute pitch. Group work activities, including oral and pitch presentations, allowed attendees to apply their learning in real-time. These sessions encouraged peer collaboration and provided opportunities for constructive feedback.

Overall, the strategic communication training was another experience for attendees, equipping them with practical tools and theoretical insights necessary for effective health research dissemination.
