Upholding Ethics in Research Practices

On June 3, 2024, 5 faculty members of Lyceum-Northwestern University joined the “Basic Research Ethics Training“ (BRET) conducted by the Region 1 Medical Center (R1MC)-Research Development and Management Center. The training focused on protocol review, designed to strengthen ethical standards in scientific research.

The training was led by Dr. Hilarion H. Maramba, Jr., Officer In-Charge of Research Program Center for Education, Training and Research, who provided essential insights into conducting ethical research and ensuring compliance with national ethical guidelines.

The training covered critical aspects of research ethics, with a strong emphasis on the protocol review process. Dr. Maramba, along with his committee members, thoroughly discussed key ethical issues frequently encountered in research, including obtaining informed consent, ensuring privacy and confidentiality, managing conflicts of interest, and protecting vulnerable populations.

The trainers emphasized the importance of rigorous protocol review to ensure that research studies align with ethical principles and contribute meaningfully to scientific progress while safeguarding the participants’ rights and well-being.

By enhancing participants’ understanding of national ethical guidelines, the training ensured that research protocols were both scientifically rigorous and ethically sound, thereby strengthening the credibility and integrity of the research community.
