Lyceum-Northwestern University Opens Research and Innovation Week with a Focus on AI in Education

October 22, 2024

Lyceum-Northwestern University (L-NU) launched its annual Research and Innovation Week, spearheaded by the Research and Innovation Management Office (RIMO), with an Opening Program and Seminar centered on the transformative theme, “Leveraging AI for Sustainable Quality Education.” The event aimed to explore the potential of artificial intelligence (AI) in shaping the future of education and ensuring sustainable learning solutions.

Dr. Marco Francisco S. Duque, L-NU’s Executive Vice President, officially commenced the week-long celebration, stressing the critical role of AI in driving educational innovation. In his opening remarks, he highlighted how the event fosters knowledge-sharing that extends beyond the university, inspiring advancements in education both locally and globally.

University President Dr. Luz T. Duque-Hammershaimb continued this momentum, welcoming attendees with an address that outlined the significance of AI in promoting inclusivity, innovation, and lifelong learning in education. Reiterating the theme, she called for AI-driven solutions that prioritize sustainable practices, emphasizing that technology should support, not replace, the role of educators. Dr. Duque-Hammershaimb also honored the enduring legacy of L-NU co-founder Madame Florencia T. Duque, underscoring the university’s mission to empower learners through forward-thinking initiatives.

The seminar’s program showcased expert insights, with Dr. Cynthia Lopez, Vice President for Research and Innovation Management, leading with her talk, “Angle Approach in Writing for Publication.” Dr. Lopez shared strategic methods for enhancing publication success, providing practical tips on crafting research papers that resonate with academic publishers. Dr. Thelma Palaoag, Director of the Innovation and Technology Transfer Office at the University of the Cordilleras, followed with a presentation titled “Leveraging AI in Writing Research for Publication.” Dr. Palaoag discussed AI-enabled tools, ethical considerations, and the potential of AI to streamline the research process, making it more accessible and efficient for academic professionals.

The program transitioned into a practical workshop led by Dr. Rodney Odesson P. Raguindin OIC- Office of the Vice President for Academic Affairs and Head of the Center for Curriculum Innovation and Professional Development, and Dr. Lopez, focusing on establishing ORCID and Google Scholar profiles. Dr. Rodney demonstrated the ORCID setup process, highlighting how integrating digital object identifiers (DOIs) and utilizing tools like MyBib and ChatGPT for APA citations can enhance academic visibility. He emphasized that Google Scholar can further expand researchers’ reach by automatically linking publications to their profiles and encouraged participants to contribute to institutional journals such as the Journal of Multidisciplinary Advanced and Professional Studies (JMAPS).

Dr. Cynthia underscored the importance of avoiding premature uploads to ORCID to prevent issues with self-plagiarism, emphasizing the value of institutional affiliations in establishing academic credibility. Both facilitators shared insights on writing concise abstracts and structuring introductions to strengthen research narratives. They encouraged attendees to use AI tools responsibly, maintaining originality while leveraging technology for research support.

The Research and Innovation Week at L-NU not only highlights the educational potential of AI but also reinforces the university’s commitment to fostering collaborative research that aligns with sustainable development goals. As the week continues, students, faculty, and researchers look forward to engaging in meaningful discussions and advancing knowledge that supports a resilient, AI-integrated future in education.
