Luzon Regional Scientific Meeting 2024
April 29-30, 2024
The Luzon Regional Scientific Meeting, convened by the Department of Science and Technology-National Academy of Science and Technology (DOST-NAST) on April 29-30, 2024, at NGN Hotel in Tuguegarao City, Cagayan brought together researchers and innovators to tackle pressing issues within the Philippine food system. Under the theme “Beyond Farm Productivity: Transforming the Philippine Food System to Address Equity, Consumer Health, and Environmental Issues,” the event served as a vital platform for dialogue and collaboration.
One of the highlights of the meeting was the impressive display of 17 poster presentations from various regions, including Regions I, II, III, IV-A, V, and the National Capital Region (NCR). These presentations showcased innovative research and provided insights into addressing agricultural challenges in a rapidly changing environment. Notably, Lyceum-Northwestern University secured third place for the best poster presentation with their work titled “Spatio-temporal Distribution of Insect Pests on Rice Paddy Fields with Regards to Climate Change.” Authored by Joan Daryl Abellera and John Paul Payopay, this study highlighted the critical relationship between climate change and pest management, emphasizing the need for adaptive strategies in agricultural practices.
The event was marked by the presence of esteemed judges, including members from the Agricultural and Biological Sciences Divisions of NAST-Phl and regional directors from the Department of Science and Technology. Their involvement not only lent credibility to the presentations but also encouraged rigorous assessment and constructive feedback.
